Affenberg as Noah’s ark

Affenberg Salem is like Noah’s ark for Barbary macaques: a place that ensures their survival. In the last 25 years, the Barbary macaque population dropped dramatically and is estimated to less than 8,000 Barbary macaques living in the wild.

Four main reasons caused this dramatic decline:

  • Destruction of habitat

  • Competition with cattle

  • Illegal trade with babies

  • Monkeys used for Photo Prop Tourism Trade

At Affenberg everything revolves around animal welfare. Nearly 200 Barbary macaques live, here, under perfect conditions. The innovative concept was launched in 1969 by Gilbert de Turckheim and Jacques Renaud.
